First home gift ideas that mark the new address

· Lat & Long · 6 min read

A first home is a door, a postcode and a set of keys. The gifts that still make sense in a year are the ones that remember that place, not another bottle. If you want a first home gift that belongs on the wall, start with the house itself.

Design the map of the new address in the first-home editor. Type a postcode, drop a pin on the door, add a line of words. We draw the streets.

What is worth giving, and what is not

Most first home gift ideas are kind, and most of them disappear. Wine goes. Candles go. A wooden sign that says “home” could belong to anyone on the street. None of that is a reason to skip a housewarming. It is a reason to add one thing that is actually theirs.

A first home personalised gift works when three things are true:

  • It is the real street, not a drawing of a generic terrace.
  • The words sound like the person, not like a shop.
  • You can get it right without being a designer.

Kitchen kit is useful on week one. A map of the door is the thing they will still have when the pan is replaced. Ask for the postcode if you do not already have it. If you cannot name the street, you do not yet have the gift.

Our first home, or a first home of your own

An our first home gift for two people can carry a shared line: the night the keys arrived, the nickname for the house, the completion date. Keep it to a few words. The map is already doing the work.

A first home together gift does not need two pins. One place, one marker, and a title you would still like in ten years. “Our first home” is enough. So is the street name on its own.

A first home gift for a single person should not invent a household. Skip anything that assumes a partner, a family or a “we”. “My first home”, the number of the house, or no title at all will read more cleanly than a slogan. The person who bought the place is the whole story.

You are not making a floorplan. You are pinning the spot.

A new home gift, personalised to the actual door

A new home gift personalised with the address beats one with names on a tea towel. Names migrate around a kitchen. The street stays put.

If you want wording, start here and then cut it back:

  • The first front door
  • Home, and the month you completed
  • The street name only
  • A private name for the house
  • The coordinates, and nothing else

British dates read best on a print: 4 April 2026, or April 2026 if you would rather not be exact. You do not need the full postal address in the title if the map is already the address. Coordinates can sit in decimal degrees or in degrees, minutes and seconds, or you can hide them.

Zoom is the decision people rush. Too close and you lose the neighbourhood they chose. Too wide and the pin sits in a wash of city. Start on the street. Pull out until you can see the park, the station or the corner shop. Then stop.

You can map a place anywhere in the world. Physical prints come to UK addresses only. The house on the paper can be in Leeds, Lisbon or anywhere you can find. If the exact building will not come up, search nearby, drag the map and tap to drop the pin.

Colour, layout and how the pin sits

Lat & Long maps are line art, drawn by us from OpenStreetMap, the free, community-made map of the world, maintained by volunteers. We draw the roads, railways, rivers, coastlines and parks, and we set your words in type. Every print carries the credit © OpenStreetMap contributors. These are not satellite photographs. Very new roads or small paths may occasionally be missing.

Eight colourways, each tuned for print: Ink, Navy & Brass, Blush, Forest, Terracotta, Monochrome Night, Sage and Coastal Blue. Ink and Navy & Brass sit quietly in a hallway. Sage and Coastal Blue if the rooms are already pale. Terracotta if they like warmth. You see the choice as you make it. The preview and the print file come from the same engine. What you approve is what we print.

Four layouts: Classic, with the neighbourhood edge to edge; Circle; Heart; or Minimal, which is the map and the coordinates only. Heart is a choice, not a requirement. Minimal often looks right once the rest of the house has settled.

Mark the door with a heart, a pin or a star, or with no marker at all. One marker only. No extra pins, and no route from the old flat. If the old place matters too, make a second map rather than crowding the first.

There are four options, and only these:

Option Price
Digital download £14
A3 print £35, plus £3.95 UK delivery
Framed, 30 x 40 cm £79, free UK delivery
Framed, 50 x 70 cm £119, free UK delivery

Digital if they are not in the UK, or if you want the file in an inbox within minutes. A3 if they like to choose their own frame. Framed if you want it ready to go on the wall.

You can send a print straight to the new address. Enter their name and address at checkout. Order emails come to you, not to them.

The first Christmas in the new home

A first Christmas in a new home gift can be the map of the street they will walk that December. It does not need snow in the title. The coordinates of the front door are enough.

The last order date for Christmas delivery of prints and framed maps is the last weekday on or before 14 December. For Christmas 2026 that is Monday 14 December. Missed it? A digital download still arrives within minutes.

Other starting points sit on the gift ideas page if you are buying for a birthday or a new set of keys that is not quite Christmas.

If you have been looking on a marketplace

If you have been looking for an Etsy first home gift, you will have seen a lot of the same signs, key hooks and bottles. Some of it is charming. Almost none of it is the house.

A map of the actual postcode removes that gamble. You place the pin. You write the line. We draw the rest. Buy the place, not a slogan.

Before you order

  1. Get the postcode, or enough of the street to search.
  2. Open the first-home editor and drop the pin on the door.
  3. Choose how much of the neighbourhood to show.
  4. Add a title you would still like in ten years.
  5. Pick a digital download, an A3 print or a framed print, then check out.

Lat & Long is for the places your story happened. A first front door is one of those places. When you are ready, design the map of the house.

Questions people ask

What should I look for in a first home gift?

Something about their actual house, not a generic idea of home. If you cannot name the street, you do not yet have the gift. A map of the door, with a short title they would still like in ten years, is the version that lasts.

Can I make a map if I only know the postcode?

Yes. Search the postcode in the editor, drag the map until the building is in view, then tap to drop the pin on the door. If the exact spot will not come up, search nearby and place the pin yourself.

Is a map a good first home gift for someone buying on their own?

Yes, if you keep the words honest. Use the street name, "My first home", or no title. Skip any line that assumes a partner or a household of two.

Can I send the print straight to the new address?

Yes. Enter their name and address as the delivery address at checkout. Order confirmations and tracking come to you, not to them.

What if they live outside the UK?

Physical prints go to UK addresses only. A digital download works anywhere in the world, and the place on the map can still be the house.
